If you are fairly new to the web yet have a business and get the impression you need a website then exactly where to start and what you need may not be obvious to you. First of all you need a domain name, it may seem it would make sense to have the website first but it is actually better to get a domain name sorted out. It may be the domain name you want is taken and this means that the design of your site may need to take this into account with the header and so on. It is better to have a name that ends in .com or maybe .net that is not quite what you wanted than to get a name that has some other ending that won’t look professional, also avoid free sub-domains as these look very unprofessional and will lose you custom, even just by giving out a business card with the address on. Once you have the domain name then you need the website, it may be you do want it to be fully functioning with all sorts of features and things like media delivery systems; for other website types though they can be surprisingly simple and cheap, especially if based on open source software. This includes e-commerce websites, you can have a site that is primarily for selling or one that promotes your business and has some options for selling as well. An e-commerce site can be made so that you can access an easy to use intuitive control panel and so don’t need to use web designers every time you need to add new products or change details. With a website based on something like Wordpress the same is true for your basic content. You can use a Wordpress site to post regular updates and news from your business as well, regular content will help improve your rankings in Google’s results too.

Once your website is finished you will need hosting, hosting will allow your website to be accessed over the internet from anywhere and the right hosting will make sure it can be loaded quickly even with many people accessing your website at once. Hosting is available from web designers usually but also from elsewhere which you may feel is better value but make sure you understand what you are getting and what you will need. The more visitors you have and the more media you have on your site the higher bandwidth you will need to make sure the website runs quickly. Some websites designed in particular programming languages also need particular types of hosting to run on.

Once you have your website set up on a hosting server and have a domain that points to the location of your website on that server then anyone can put in your address and access it. You may want to do some online marketing though to drive more traffic; traffic can come directly from other sites as well as from search engines, there is a lot you can do to improve where you appear in search engine results and the higher you are the more traffic and potential customers you will get.
